The Most Emotional Moments in One Piece (Iconic Scenes)

From Ace's death to Merry's farewell, relive the most heartbreaking and uplifting scenes in One Piece that moved millions of fans to tears.

One Piece is not a pure action manga — at its heart, it is a story driven by emotion. Beyond the spectacular battles, Eiichiro Oda’s true genius lies in the moments where emotion changes everything. Here are the most emotional moments in the series — the ones that have moved millions of readers to tears.

1. Ace’s death at Marineford

The most devastating moment in the entire manga. Portgas D. Ace, rescued by Luffy from the scaffold, is fatally pierced by Akainu as he shields his little brother. His final words to Luffy: “Thank you for loving me.” The image of Luffy screaming while cradling his dying brother is one of the most reproduced panels in modern manga.

Marineford does not merely kill Ace — it traumatises Luffy so deeply that it takes two years of training with Rayleigh before he can begin to heal.

2. Merry’s funeral

After the escape from Enies Lobby, the Merry splits apart — her hull too damaged to sail any further. The crew holds a Viking-style funeral at sea. Before the ship sinks beneath the waves, the Klabautermann manifests one last time to thank the crew: “Thank you for loving me. I wanted to take you further… but I am so tired.”

This scene makes the Going Merry one of the very few character-ships in all of fiction to receive a proper funeral.

3. Robin’s “I want to live!” at Enies Lobby

Throughout the Water Seven arc, Nico Robin refused her crewmates’ help, convinced that she only brought misfortune to those around her. At the top of the Tower of Justice, as Spandam threatens her, Luffy asks her the fateful question: “Robin, say it. Tell us you want to live. Say it!”

Robin’s answer — “I want to LIVE!” — triggers the crew’s full assault on Enies Lobby and the burning of the World Government’s flag. For many fans, this is the emotional pinnacle of the Straw Hats as a family.

4. The separation at Sabaody

Bartholomew Kuma uses his Nikyu Nikyu no Mi to scatter the entire crew to the four corners of the world. For two years (the timeskip), Luffy believes he has lost everything. The scene where he weeps and tattoos the code “3D2Y” on his arm (“3 days, 2 years”) to reschedule the reunion with his crew is one of the most gut-wrenching in the series.

Emotional bonus: what we later learn — Kuma actually saved them. His decision spared every one of them from a hopeless battle against Kizaru.

5. Chopper’s past and Dr Hiluluk

On Drum Island, Tony Tony Chopper is rejected by his herd of reindeer after eating the Hito Hito no Mi. Taken in by Dr Hiluluk — a charlatan doctor but a good man — he lives the only moment of genuine happiness in his life before meeting the Straw Hats. Hiluluk dies shouting his philosophy to Chopper: “When does a man truly die? When he is forgotten.”

6. Oden’s promise and the dawn of Wano

Twenty years after the death of Kozuki Oden — boiled alive by Orochi — his promise “In 20 years, the dawn will come” is finally fulfilled. When the sky brightens over Onigashima after Kaido’s defeat, Yamato can at last whisper to his spiritual father: “Do you see, Oden? The dawn has arrived.”

7. Bink’s Sake and Brook’s final song

On Thriller Bark, Brook finally joins the crew after fifty years of solitude. That night, beneath a sky full of stars, the entire crew sings Bink’s Sake — the song of Brook’s old Rumbar Pirates crew, preserved within his bones for half a century.

Brook’s promise to Laboon — to return to his whale after sailing around the world — remains one of the series’ most cherished unresolved emotional debts.

8. Bellemere and the storm at Cocoyashi Village

Bellemere, the adoptive mother of Nami and Nojiko, is killed by Arlong in front of her daughters because she paid for both girls rather than lie about being their mother. The moment Nami screams while signing Arlong’s agreement, years later — “Help me!” — is one of the most heartbreaking cries for help in the entire manga.

9. Luffy’s Gear Fifth against Kaido

Not a sad moment, but a cathartic one. After nearly dying in his battle against Kaido, Luffy awakens in Gear Fifth — the revelation that his Devil Fruit is in truth the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, and that his entire destiny was written long ago. Luffy’s laughter in Gear Fifth echoes Roger’s own at Laugh Tale.

10. The Straw Hats’ reunion at Sabaody

After two years apart, the crew reunites one by one at Sabaody Archipelago to reform the crew. The wordless reunion, the knowing glances shared after so much suffering, and the departure toward Fishman Island bring closure to the most emotionally charged arc of the entire first half of the series.
