Combat & Powers
Akuma no Mi (Devil Fruit)
Mysterious fruits that grant whoever consumes them a supernatural power — at the permanent cost of the ability to swim. There are 3 categories: Paramecia (body modifications or special powers), Zoan (animal transformations), and Logia (the body transforms into a natural element, becoming intangible). See our complete Devil Fruit guide.
Paramecia
The largest category of Devil Fruit. Modifies the user’s body or grants a special power (elasticity, threads, sand, surgery…). The Gomu Gomu no Mi of Luffy and the Gura Gura no Mi of Whitebeard are Paramecia.
Zoan
A fruit that allows transformation into an animal. Three sub-categories: standard Zoan (ordinary animals), ancient Zoan (prehistoric animals), and mythical Zoan (legendary creatures — Phoenix of Marco, Azure Dragon of Kaido, Nika of Luffy).
Logia
The rarest category. The user transforms their body into a natural element (fire, ice, lightning, light, magma, sand, darkness…) and becomes intangible against standard attacks. Only Haki or specific weaknesses can touch them. Examples: Akainu (magma), Aokiji (ice), Enel (lightning).
Haki
Spiritual energy dormant within every living being. Three forms:
- Armament Haki (Busoshoku) — coats the body or weapons in an invisible armour, allowing the user to hit Logia users.
- Observation Haki (Kenbunshoku) — heightened perception, ability to anticipate attacks. Advanced form: seeing the immediate future.
- Conqueror’s Haki (Haoshoku) — the rarest; it cannot be learned: one is born with it or not. Allows the user to overwhelm weak-willed opponents with a single glance. Advanced form: infusing blows with Haki.
Awakening
An advanced state of the Devil Fruit that allows the user to transform not only their body, but also the surrounding environment. Very rare, achieved only after intensive training. Confirmed examples: Doflamingo (strings), Katakuri (mochi), Luffy in Gear 5 (rubber-cartoon), Robin (Demonio Fleur).
SMILE
Artificial Devil Fruits created by Caesar Clown from the chemical compound SAD. The failure rate is extremely high: most consumers become cripples unable to cry (hence the name “SMILE”). Used to create the Beast Pirates’ Gifters under Kaido.
Kairoseki (Sea-Prism Stone)
A rare stone that emits the same type of energy as the sea. It neutralises the powers of Devil Fruit users on contact. Used for prisoner handcuffs, certain special blades, and the coating of Impel Down’s cells.
Geography & Navigation
Grand Line
The main sea of the One Piece world, located at the centre of the globe. This is where pirates sail in search of the One Piece. Divided into two halves: Paradise (the first half, traversed by Luffy from the East Blue saga to Sabaody) and the New World (the second half, controlled by the Yonko).
Reverse Mountain
An inverted mountain at the entrance to the Grand Line, where the currents of the 4 Blues converge and flow upwards. The only safe way to enter the Grand Line — all other routes are blocked by the Calm Belt.
Calm Belt
Two maritime bands flanking the Grand Line, with no wind or current whatsoever — making normal navigation impossible. Inhabited by Sea Kings, gigantic creatures. Only Marine ships coated in Kairoseki can cross safely.
New World
The second half of the Grand Line, beyond Fish-Man Island. The most dangerous sea in the world — unpredictable weather phenomena, ruled by the Yonko. This is where Laugh Tale, the final island, is located.
Laugh Tale
The final island of the Grand Line, reached only by Gol D. Roger and his crew. This is where the One Piece is hidden. To reach it, one must gather all 4 Road Poneglyphs.
Red Line
A continent that encircles the globe in a cross formation with the Grand Line, dividing the world into 4 quadrants: East Blue, West Blue, North Blue, South Blue. Its summit is home to Mary Geoise, the capital of the World Government.
Sabaody Archipelago
An archipelago at the junction of Paradise and the New World. The place where Luffy lost his crew to Bartholomew Kuma, and where they reunited two years later. Also the slave market where Boa Hancock was captured as a child.
Organisations & Politics
Yonko (Four Emperors)
The 4 most powerful pirate captains in the New World. Current composition (post-Wano): Shanks, Blackbeard, Luffy, and Buggy (Cross Guild). See our complete Yonko guide.
Shichibukai (Seven Warlords of the Sea)
A former system in which 7 pirates officially cooperated with the World Government in exchange for amnesty. Dissolved during the Reverie following the Whole Cake Island arc. Notable former members: Crocodile, Doflamingo, Mihawk, Boa Hancock, Kuma, Gecko Moria.
Marines
The armed force of the World Government. Hierarchy: Fleet Admiral (currently Akainu) → Admirals → Vice Admirals → Officers. See our Marines pack.
Gorosei (Five Elders)
Five immortal founding saints at the apex of the World Government. Each possesses a mythical Zoan Devil Fruit. They serve Im-sama, the hidden ruler of the world. The final antagonists of the series, based primarily at Mary Geoise.
Im / Im-sama
A mysterious figure seated on the Empty Throne at Mary Geoise — revealed to be the “ruler of the world”. Capable of erasing entire islands (Lulusia). The Five Elders (Gorosei) pledge allegiance to Im-sama. Presumed final enemy of the series.
Tenryūbito (Celestial Dragons)
Descendants of the 20 founding kings of the World Government from 800 years ago. They live at Mary Geoise in absolute luxury, treating ordinary humans as slaves. Any ordinary citizen who attacks one of them can trigger a Buster Call against their home island. Doflamingo, Saturn, and Saint Charlos are connected to them.
CP9 / CP0 (Cipher Pol)
Espionage and assassination agencies of the World Government. CP9 appears in the Enies Lobby arc (Rob Lucci, Kaku, Jabra, Spandam). CP0 is the elite unit, acting directly under orders from the Five Elders — appearing at Dressrosa, Whole Cake Island, Wano, and Egghead.
Revolutionary Army
An organisation led by Monkey D. Dragon, Luffy’s father. Its goal is to liberate the world from the World Government. Chief of Staff: Sabo. At Mary Geoise, the Army is said to have struck down a Celestial Dragon noble.
Mysteries & Mythology
One Piece
The legendary treasure left by Gol D. Roger on the island of Laugh Tale. Its exact nature has not yet been revealed to Luffy’s crew — but all signs point to it being connected to the truth of the Void Century. Roger said he arrived “too early” to claim it.
Void Century
A period of 100 years erased from official history, between the age of the Ancient Kingdoms and the founding of the World Government 800 years ago. The Government hunts anyone who attempts to piece it back together. The Poneglyphs are the only source of information.
Poneglyphs
Ancient stone steles of indestructible material, engraved in an ancient language. Scattered across the world by the kingdom of Ohara. Nico Robin is the only person in the world able to read them. Categories:
- Historical Poneglyphs — recount fragments of the Void Century
- Road Poneglyphs — four steles that together point the way to Laugh Tale
- Rio Poneglyph — the final stele containing the whole truth, located at Laugh Tale
Will of D
Several characters bear the initial “D.” in their name (Monkey D. Luffy, Gol D. Roger, Marshall D. Teach, Trafalgar D. Water Law…). They are referred to as “the natural enemies of the Gods” by the World Government. The prevailing theory: the D. represents an ancient lineage connected to the Ancient Kingdom destroyed during the Void Century.
Joy Boy
A mythical figure from the Void Century — a warrior of the enslaved, a defender of the oppressed, capable of transforming suffering into celebration. Mentioned in Poneglyphs deciphered by Robin. Theory: Luffy is the new Joy Boy, the modern heir to this legendary figure. Luffy’s laughter in Gear 5 is identical to Roger’s when he learned the truth at Laugh Tale.
Nika (Sun God of Freedom)
An ancient mythical warrior mentioned in the folklore of Mary Geoise’s slaves. The Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika is the mythical Zoan fruit that embodies this god. The World Government concealed it for 800 years, deliberately downgrading it under the name Gomu Gomu no Mi so it would go unnoticed. Luffy is its accidental yet destined heir. See the Luffy Gear 5 Wanted Poster.
Buster Call
An order for the total annihilation of an island, executed by 5 vice admirals and 10 warships. Reserved for major threats against the World Government. Ohara was destroyed by a Buster Call; Robin is the sole survivor.
Items & Tools
Berry (₿ / ฿)
The primary currency of the One Piece world. Symbolised by ₿ or ฿ in the manga. Pirate bounties are denominated in Berries (Luffy: 1.5 billion ₿). For reference, a meal costs around 1,000 ₿, a hotel room around 5,000 ₿.
Den Den Mushi
Snail-telephones used for long-distance communications. Variants: Black Den Den Mushi (secret transmissions), White Den Den Mushi (signal-jamming), Visual Den Den Mushi (video calls), Buster Call Den Den Mushi (red, triggers a Buster Call).
Vivre Card (Life Paper)
Biological paper made from a person’s fingernail clippings. It always points towards its owner and burns if that person dies. Used as a “personal compass” to locate someone (Ace’s then Sabo’s Vivre Card, given to Luffy).
Log Pose
A special compass indispensable for navigating the Grand Line. It memorises the magnetic field of one island to point towards the next. Variants: Eternal Pose (permanently points to a specific island without resetting), 3-needle Log Pose (New World, chooses between 3 routes).
Klabautermann
The guardian spirit of a ship, which rarely appears when a vessel is greatly loved and well cared for. The Going Merry had a Klabautermann; its manifestation during the ship’s funeral at Enies Lobby is one of the most emotionally powerful moments in the series.
Sake and the Brotherhood Oath
In Japanese folklore and in One Piece, sharing a cup of sake seals a bond of brotherhood or allegiance stronger than blood. Luffy, Ace and Sabo sealed their brotherhood this way at Dawn Island. Yonko-vassal pacts also use this ritual.
Sulong
A transformation form of the Mink (the animal people of Zou) under the full moon. Multiplies strength and speed tenfold; fur turns white. A power kept secret, revealed at Onigashima. See Carrot and Nekomamushi.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many terms does One Piece have in total?
Beyond this glossary (~30 essential terms), the One Piece universe contains hundreds of specific terms (combat techniques, locations, minor organisations, species). This glossary covers the essentials needed to understand the series.
How can the Poneglyphs be read?
Only Nico Robin can read them — a skill taught to her by her biological mother, Nico Olvia, the last scholar of Ohara. The Government has been hunting down this knowledge for 800 years.
Is there a ranking of the most powerful Devil Fruits?
Unofficially: the Gura Gura no Mi (Whitebeard) is considered the most powerful Paramecia. Mythical Zoans (Nika, Seiryu, Daibutsu) are on a similar level. Blackbeard’s Yami Yami no Mi is unique in that it neutralises other fruits. Rankings vary depending on context.
